Bill S-229 tabled in the House of Commons
On May 2, 2017, the Underground Infrastructure Safety Enhancement Act was adopted, following its third reading in the Senate. Bill S-229 was introduced by Alberta Senator Grant Mitchel.
After its adoption by the Senate, the Bill will officially be introduced in the House of Commons this fall by Guelph’s Member of Parliament Lloyd Longfield.
During the Bill’s third reading, Quebec Senator Éric Forest (former president for the UMQ) claimed: “Given the astronomical costs that our fellow Canadians are forced to absorb, if Bill S-229 addressed that concern about getting municipal governments involved, I’m sure municipalities would be on board in a heartbeat.” This is a fine example of the Bill’s utmost importance where its goal is to enhance the safety of underground infrastructures on federal land.
