    • Pipelines Committee

The Pipeline Committee’s members are the following companies that transport hydrocarbons by underground pipeline: Champion Pipe Line Corporation, Enbridge, Gaz Métro, Niagara Gas Transmission, Pipe-lines Montréal, TQM Pipeline, Trans-Northern Pipelines and TransCanada. The Committee’s mission is to develop, transmit and promote a common prevention message to ensure the safety of the public and the integrity of the members’ transportation systems.

The member companies want to reach the same publics (municipalities, excavators, schools, associations, etc.), so a combined effort enables them to reach this clientele more effectively and to ensure wider dissemination of their message regarding safety and prevention measures. With this objective in mind, the awareness efforts begun by the Pipeline Committee several years ago continued in 2010.

First, a new awareness campaign for the municipalities crossed by the pipeline systems began in 2009. As part of the campaign, the Committee met during the year with employees of five municipalities: Granby, Laval, Mascouche, Montréal-Est and Repentigny.

Second, in 2009 the Pipeline Committee:

      • Met with students and instructors at the following schools:
        • Centre de formation en montage de lignes, Commission scolaire des Navigateurs, St-Henri
        • École de formation d’opérateurs de machinerie lourde, Commission scolaire des Navigateurs, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome
        • École de formation d’opérateurs de machinerie lourde, Commission scolaire des Trois-Lacs, Les Cèdres
        • Université Laval bachelor’s program in geomatics, Québec City
      • Reiterated its prevention and safety message to excavators and municipalities in the areas crossed by the member companies’ pipeline systems by means of:
        • Personalized mailing (leaflets and practical information) to remind them that they must contact the pipeline companies when they plan work in proximity to pipelines

      • Published an advertorial in 16 journals published by various municipalities; the journals are distributed free of charge to all households and are available on the municipalities’ websites in the following municipalities:
        • Arrondissement Montréal-Nord
        • Deux-Montagnes
        • Oka
        • Laval
        • Les Cèdres
        • Mirabel
        • Mascouche
        • Repentigny
        • Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu
        • Saint-Joseph-du-Lac
        • Saint-Sébastien
        • Sainte-Anne-de-Sabrevois
        • Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville
        • Sainte-Justine-de-Newton
        • Saine-Marthe-sur-le-Lac
      • Took part in the conference of the Association des directeurs généraux des municipalités du Québec and of the Fédération québécoise des municipalités (FMQ):
        • Info-Excavation and the Pipeline Committee shared a booth and took advantage of the opportunity to remind the presence of the pipeline systems
      • Took part in the morning meetings of the Alliance pour la protection des infrastructures souterraines du Québec (APISQ) in the following regions: Québec City, Longueuil, Berthierville.

Lastly, the Committee approached various organizations that can help get its safety and prevention message across. These organizations are the following:

UPA — Union des producteurs agricoles

The members’ systems cross 12 of the UPA’s 16 regional federations. The Pipeline Committee and Info-Excavation shared a booth at the Colloque des partenaires de la santé et de la sécurité en agriculture (symposium of health and safety partners in agriculture) organized jointly by the UPA and the CSST. The event attracted prevention professionals from the agricultural sector.

      Chambre des notaires du Québec

The Pipeline Committee’s leaflet Excaver… sans nous oublier was distributed as an advertising insert in Entracte, the journal of the Chambre des notaires, for a total of 3,500 leaflets distributed.
